Lewiston, Maine & Boston: Bradford Peck, 1900. Hardcover. xv, 311p., frontispiece (folded as issued), other illustrations include a second folded one and a doublespread. First edition in dark green cloth boards titled and decorated in silver-foil, in dust jacket. A near-fine copy. The jacket however is acidic, quite toned and fragile with large chips from head and tail (through which our new archival-grade brodart shows bright-white areas) and a few more small chips along edges. Dj verso was strengthened long ago with short strips of clear tape, these not at all pulled or wrinkled but doubtless weak. Ffep bears a previous owner's stamp (one Barbara K. Peck); all in all item is in very good condition. *Sargent. Wright III 4138, Egbert, pp. 302, 466-7. "Describes a businessman's utopia based on efficient distribution by co-op department stores -- a 'practical' application of Christianity. Peck actually tried this experiment." *Kenneth M.Roemer, The obsolete necessity, p. 208.

Description:
Lewiston, ME / Boston: Bradford Peck, 1900. Troubled small businessman, drugged to help him sleep, awakens from a coma 25 years in his future to find a utopian society based on cooperative business principles & the teachings of Jesus; advertising, competition, & factionalism having been eliminated. Rev. Lund points out in his preface that, before they fell, most of the world's great empires had concentrated most of their wealth into the hands of very few. Peck, the author, ran a successful department store in Lewiston ("the largest...in New England, outside of Boston") and in an afternote, solicits funds to found the key institution of the book, promising a signed 'edition de luxe' of the book to contributors. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book; jacket shows minor edgewear, a short tear to rear panel, creases at head of spine, tiny chips. Text clean; xv, [3], [312] pages; 16 b/w illustrations - mostly of buildings & floorplans - as called for, 2… Read More
