About This Item

London: Bell and Daldy, 1870-75. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7" by 5". Not Stated. A lovely late nineteenth-century set of selected works of American writer, Washington Irving, handsomely bound in uniform half morocco binding. Presenting this very smart and uniformly bound set of selected works of nineteenth century American writer Washington Irving. Twenty-one works bound uniformly in fourteen volumes. Each volume contains a frontispiece and volume title page, as well as a title page for the individual works bound within. This set belonged to Francis Henry Jeune (1843-1905), a prolific nineteenth-century British judge, and his bookplate can be found to the front pastedown of each volume. This set includes: Volume I. Salmagundi; or, The Whim-Whams and Opinions of Launcelot Langstaff, Esq., published in 1870. A History of New York, From The Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, published in 1875. Volume II.The Sketch Book, published in 1875. Oliver Goldsmith: A Biography, published in 1875.Volume III.Bracebridge Hall; or, The Humourists, published in 1874.Abbotsford, And Newstead Abbey, published in 1875.Volume IV.The Alhambra, published in 1873.Tales of a Traveller, published in 1872.Volume V.A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada and Legends of the Conquest of Spain, published in 1874.Volume VI.The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, Volume I, published in 1875. Volume VII.The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, Volume II, published in 1875. Volume VIII.Astoria; or, Anecdotes of An Enterprise Beyond the Rocky Mountains, published in 1870.Tour on the Prairies, published in 1875.Volume IX.Life of Mahomet, published in 1874.Lives of the Successors of Mahomet, published in 1875.Volume X.The Adventures of Captain Bonneville, U.S.A., published in 1872.The Conquest of Florida Under Hernando de Soto, published in 1872. Volumes XI-XIV.The Life of George Washington, Volume I, published in 1875. The Life of George Washington, Volume II, published in 1875.The Life of George Washington, Volume III, published in 1875.  The Life of George Washington, Volume IV, published in 1875.The frontispieces and title pages in the last four volumes are from Henry G. Bohn's 'The Works of Washington Irving', dated 1859, though the work itself is the 1875 edition published by Bell & Daldy. The contents pages for the last four volumes have been bound in together at the start of Volume XI. Washington Irving was an American author, essayist and historian best known for his short stories. In the course of his career his works were published under various pseudonyms, the most famous being Geoffrey Crayon, under which he published The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. He made his literary debut in 1802 and moved to England in 1915 where he achieved international fame. He is considered America's first genuine internationally best-selling author. Handsomely bound in half morocco with marbled boards and gilt detailing to the spines. Externally, very smart, with some general shelf wear and light rubbing to the extremities, particularly to the head of the front joints on Volumes II and XIV. A small amount of loss to the paper binding to the front board of Volume V. Bookplate of Francis Henry Jeune to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, front hinges to Volumes II and VII are slightly tender. Remaining binding is firm throughout. A few spots to the first few pages of the odd volume, otherwise pages are bright and clean.
