Printed for T Longman in Pater-Noster-Row, [London], 1762, first edition (but see later); 8vo, pp xx, 371 plus page of list of books printed for Thomas Longman; contemporary calf, both boards detached and the one mismatched in design with the other, spine good but with some small loss head and foot so a copy in need of binding repair; bottom corner of front free end paper missing but the book block complete, firm and with good margins although with a little light dust soiling here and there, particularly on the title page where exposed at the foot. Although this is indeed a first edition under this particular title the work was earlier printed 1750 as "The Reflector Representing Human Affairs As They Are and May Be Improved ... " Other than for the title and, hence, title page, this Longman reprint appears to be identical to the earlier edition right down to the list of books at the end. Uniformly rebound in three-quarter dark green cloth with black and white marbled sides. Black leather spine labels with titles stamped in gilt and floral flourish stamped in gilt in center spines. xvi, 316 pp; 342 pp; 314 pp. Silk ribbon markers. A set as dashingly handsome as its subject, Louis-Francois-Armand du Plessis, Duc de Richelieu (1696-1788) , who was (often) a member of King Louis XV’s court, a soldier, diplomat, and celebrated womanizer. It is thought that the notorious character of Valmont in the 1782 classic novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses is based on Richelieu. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

This is the author's revised edition, Agapida Edition, published in 1893. 2 volumes Beautiful books in light cream colored leather binding , high quality deckled pages and lovely Moorish gilt designs on the cover and spine. Each page is framed with Moorish scroll work. The photos throughout the books are covered with glassine paper. There is some darkening, due to age, along the beveled edges of the covers and the first few pages of vo. 1. Also an inscription and signature, dated 1937 on the third flyleaf page of vol. 1.. Otherwise, the book is in fine - near new condition.
