Letchworth, London, 1775 Full-Leather. all pages present and tightly bound in. leather edges and corners rubbed and worn. 5 raised bands to spine.edge seams are cracked to both sides, and showing through - but spine covering is fully attached to surface beneath. boards showing scuffs, small discolourations, and scratches/rubs, as well as rounding of corners - all consistent with age. .pages notably browned and tarnished in parts from age. ffeps are markedly browned to edges, and similar somewhat to early pages. internally, gutter seams are cracked. no inscriptions.

Philadelphia: Joseph Crukshank, 1775. Second Edition. . Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 432 pages. Hardcover bound in original full brown leather with a red leather label on the spine. Ribbed spine. Front hinge is cracked and holding by one cord at the bottom band. The binding is worn and bumped. The text block is sound. Early owner's signature on the front flyleaf is of Sam'l Titus or Tiles or Jiles. Another similar signature in pencil on the rear flyleaf is dated 1846. The ink signature on the front flyleaf looks much closer to the original publication of the book. The text is toned and shows foxing and has some possible damp spots. Two main parts in one volume with a separate title page for his Journal at the front and a separate title page for the Second Part after page 250 (the pagination runs continuously through both parts of the book). The first part is Woolman's Journals of his Life and Travels, one of the best colonial American autobiographies. Woolman, a Quaker minister, championed abolition early in his career and preached the importance of emancipating slaves, having traveled extensively in North and South. His autobiography, uniformly praised, was often reprinted. "An autobiographical masterpiece, rivalled in 18th century America only by that of Franklin" [Howes]. Woolman's Considerations on the Keeping of Negroes, in two parts is also printed.
