Description:
London: C. Bathurst, 1766. Here is an early edition of Swift containing some of his most delightful short pieces, including "The History of John Bull" and "The Art of Political Lying." Of interest to bibliophiles would be the three essays regarding the tribulations of "Mr. Edmund Curll, Bookseller." A Very Good (Plus) copy. Nice tree calf smooth binding; five raised bands on the spine; gilt decorations and titling on red and black labels. Clean text; xvi, 239 pages. Includes the Preface from 1739. The binding is typically rubbed, particularly on the spine (the black label is mostly gone). Aside from some browning to the endpapers, affecting the edges of the Title Page, the text of a good laid rag, is generally bright, supple, and easily readable today. Despite its problems, it presents very well.. First Thus. Full-Leather. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Description:
London: W. Bowyer, L. Davis & C. Reymers, and J. Dodsley, 1766. Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), the greatest of satirists, in his capacity as a clergyman also wrote great sermons. This is Volume XIII only of a set that Quercus believes to be that edited by John Hawksworth, although no credit appears on the Title Page. Here collected are ten of the dozen surviving Sermons, including "On False Witness," "On Sleeping in Church," and "The Causes of the Wretched Conditions in Ireland." Desirable for its content, this volume can easily stand alone. A Very Good Plus copy, particularly nice internally, the laid paper still supple and clear, quite readable. 286 pages, with some staining to the endpapers. Polished calf binding, with raised bands, rubbed a bit, and with a tiny loss at head and foot of the spine. The gilt "13" is still apparent. Minor cracking that is holding nicely. Rare both institutionally and in the Trade, a sweet book. Size: 12mo - over 6¾"… Read More
