NO DUSTJACKET -- This book opens with the Battle of Sluys in 1340, often described as the first English naval victory. It ends in 1866 with the engagement at Lissa, the last fleet action in which wooden walls took part. The author's secondary purpose has been to describe the evolution of naval tactics, from the soldiers-at-sea policy of Sluys to the preoccupation with ramming which followed Lissa. 144pp.

Binding remains firm.Pages are moderately tanned. Plates remain bright with minimal tanning. More pronounced tanning and foxing to free end papers and pastedowns. Boards have light edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces and spine is presentable with minimal crushing and tanning.

The jacket spine is darkened with tears to the head & tail. viii & 144 pages. Illustrated with 4 color plates, including a frontispiece, & with numerous full-page black-and-white illustrations. The owners' names & a date are penned on the front endpaper. There is a small stain to page vi.
