About This Item

New York: Schocken Books, 1980. First Edition with full numberline 8vo size blue clothbound hardcover with dust jacket; 334 pages From jacket: "This book sets forth the ways in which human reproduction and women as reproducers are socially defined in contemporary culture. Fist the author examines the relationship between the social, psychological and medical factors in the management and context of childbirth. She discusses literature, research and practice in the reproductive field with particular reference to the models of femininity that have dominated it to date. Finding these lacking in explanatory value she then proposes an alternative perspective via an analysis of childbirth as a particular kind of life event. She view this event as a composite with several dimensions, namely: entry to full adult feminine role; status passage form the role of non-mother to that of mother; retirement from the employment sphere; occupational career change; change in physical (bodily) state; entry to medical patienthood; the experience of surgery; a "disaster" event; institutionalization. The author points to the fact that these processes, or at least a majority of these, are carried on under the rubic of "transition to motherhood" and that most of them constitute life events, which, like retirement and career change, occur independently of childbirth." Jacket has sunned spine, chipped top back of spine, several small tears and minor chipping at head and heel of spine. There is a stain on top of both front and back of jacket which does not appear on the reverse of jacket or on the book. Small spot on half title page, stain on second page of Table of Contents and abutting page; several previously folded page corners with slight impressions on abutting page corners.
