London: Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd., 1938. Good. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. 156, [1 catalogue], [3] + colour frontis and b/w line drawings by Erna Pinner. Green cloth, blue lettering to spine. Top edge blue. Extremities lightly rubbed, boards a little dusty. Tape mark and POI to front pastedown: 'To Joan/ With Love, From Lilian/ Christmas 1943'; Joan's address in pencil to rear endpaper. Toned and a little shaken, else, clean and tidy. The successful Australian novelist, Helen de Guerry Simpson, Lady Browne, (1897�1940) was a member of The Detection Club, collaborated with Clemence Dane on a trio of novels, as well as, briefly, being a British Liberal Party politician. Erna Pinner ( 1890-1987), a celebrated German Jewish artist, doll designer and biologist, emigrated to the UK in 1935. This title was re-issued as a Puffin Story Book, A Woman Among Savages in 1950. 'Horizon Books supply answers worth hearing to questions which were worth asking' (Catalogue): Nelson's Horizon Books (1937-1941) were a series of 12 (announced, but only 11 published) new books aimed at young adults. The majority were published in 1937 with this title the only one to appear in 1938 (A Series of Series Blog). Eleanor Farjeon was another author in the series.
