New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1913. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Red cloth with black lettering and black and green decoration, pictorial dust jacket. 344pp, (8pp ads). Color frontispiece, 3 full-page color plates. Near fine/very good. Jacket a bit edgeworn, with chips at tail of spine. A tight and handsome apparent first edition of this popular 1912 stage play, with author/journalist Marvin Dana (1867-1926), who penned this novel based on that play, only given credit (along with Veiller) on the book's title page -- both book and jacket's spines and front covers only cite Veillor. Choice autograph addition: Front flyleaf bears a fine dated signature from the star of the 1939 film version of the book: Ruth Hussey (1911-2005, Oscar-nominated for "The Philadelphia Story") boldly signs this heavy stock 5" X 3" card in black fineline, dating it "3 December 1988." Perfect bookmark too: Original transmittal envelope from Hussey is laid in. Much scarcer than the common 1930 Photoplay edition.
