About This Item

New York, 1868, 1872 and 1874: Harper and Brothers. First American Editions. Octavo. . First editions in book form. Double column. Broughton: 176pp., De Mille: 132pp., illustrated. and Trollope 61pp. (2) frontispiece illustrations. Rhoda Broughton's work was notable for being slightly risqué. Anthony Trollope commented in his autobiography that "she has made her ladies do and say things which ladies would not do and say". The novelist and critic Mrs. Oliphant was horrified by Broughton's "uncleanly suggestions". Her novels were soon banned from circulating libraries. James De Mille was a Canadian author whose works were serialized in magazines before being published in book form.(see Watters, Canadian Literature, p. 273) Trollope's Harry Heathcote was inspired when he traveled to Australia to visit his son during Christmas one year in the Bush of Australia. Bound in 3/4 tan morocco over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands with two compartments lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers some light scattered foxing to first few leaves of Brougton's work.
