About This Item

San Diego: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 1983. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. About Fine/Very Good at least. 688 pp. Hardcover. Publisher's original wheat colored cloth over boards, silver lettering and decorations to spine and front cover. Presentation Copy. Inscribed and dated a full month prior to publication. "8/12/1983 To Ruth Rogers, Mark Helprin ". [Not a shred of proof, but seems likely to be American ex-pat to England, River Cafe chef and owner Ruth Rogers. Additionally, years later, this copy found it's way into the library of the well known collector Otis Skinner Blodgett with his personal bookplate, signed and dated by him [London, 2001], affixed to the front paste-down. Book Condition: Gently pushed spine ends, superficial scuff mark to spine, else fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Wear to the extremities, spine ends and tips show salt and pepper loss; top to bottom crease to front flap, small tear to rear fold at bottom edge with bits of loss. Fred Marcelino's great cover illustration bright and vibrant, as is Jerry Bauer's full page portrait of Helprin filling up the rear panel. A very solid copy, still bright crisp, for this title which mostly got read to pieces. In our humble opinion a real tour de force: magical realism meets Americana as a long love letter to the greatest city in the world. Rare presentation copy with delightful provenance.

Synopsis

A bestseller that takes readers on a journey to New York of the Belle Epoque, where Peter Lake attempts to rob a Manhattan mansion only to find the daughter of the house at home. Thus begins the love between the middle-aged Irishman and Beverly Penn, a young girl who is dying. “This novel...is a gifted writer’s love affair with the language” (Newsday).
