SIGNED/INSCRIBED by George Sterling in ink on a front free endpaper to his sister: "To Isabelle, from her loving brother, George. / Carmel, California, January 7th, 1909." Sterling also SIGNED the title page in ink. First Edition, First State (Chalice on front cover, per Matilla, A4. ). Red cloth. 5 3/8" x 8". In addition to the poems, this book includes "The Triumph of Bohemia", the play given on July 27, 1907 at the Bohemian Grove, Sonoma County, as the 30th Annual midsummer High Jinks of the Bohemian Club. Poet/Playwright George Sterling (1869-1926) was a resident member of early Carmel's bohemian group and a friend of Jack London, Mary Austin and Robinson Jeffers. His later years were spent in San Francisco, where he died by his own hand in 1926. Matilla A4. A Very Good Plus or better copy (rubbed, some soiling), now in a custom, clear 4mil mylar jacket. The book is in Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. There are a couple of small spots of discoloration on the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. The foredge and bottom edges of the text block are uncut. This copy has three former owner's bookplates on three different pages: the bookplate of Janet Calhoun on the front pastedown page, the bookplate of James Wyckoff on the front endpaper, and the bookplate of Margery A, Cellier on the first free page. "He was one of the founders of the Carmel art colony and the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club. Robertson, 1909 First Printing in gilt-stamped burgundy cloth boards, no markings, NOT ex-lib, minimal shelf wear & soil to boards, small moisture droplet stain front panel foredge, spine darkened but titles legible, a few of the orginally uncut pages were separated rather inexpertly with some loss to a few page margins (contents completely unaffected), a clean tight very nice copy of this scarce title by the once-lauded writer, a work considered flawless and breathtaking by another California writer, the still-beloved Ambrose Bierce; 8vo; 137pp. First Edition.
