About This Item
The 43rd edition published by Methuen, London in 1933. The BOOK is in Very Good+ or better condition. The correct first issue of this edition with blue cloth boards with titles blind embossed on front and in gilt on spine. Just a hint of pushing at the spine ends and a little light spotting to the text-block and the prelims. A hint of residue where a previous owner's bookplate has been removed from the front pastedown but this is barely visible. The book appears unread. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition with a little edge wear at the upper spine. A few nicks with a 2cm closed tear to the upper rear spine fold. Light fading and toning to the spine. The Edith Morris wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable brodart archival cover. The colour plate frontispiece is by Nancy Barnhart. Edith Morris's wrapper illustration was only used for this edition, being dropped and replaced for the next issue. A sharp copy of this scarce edition which rarely turns up in such condition. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
Synopsis
The Wind in the Willows is a classic of children's literature by Kenneth Grahame, first published in 1908. Alternately slow moving and fast paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphised animal characters in a pastoral version of England. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie. The Wind in the Willows was in its thirty-first printing when then-famous playwright, A. A. Milne, who loved it, adapted a part of it for stage as Toad of Toad Hall in 1929.
