The First UK printing published by Methuen and Co., London in 1908. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Publisher's original green cloth, pictorial design of 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn', blocked in gilt on the front cover, and 'Mr. Toad in the willows' blocked in gilt on the spine. The gilt decoration has remained very bright. Top edge gilt with others uncut. Some very light wear to the extremities of the binding, with a little pushing at the extreme spine tips. A few light markings to the covers and only very light rubbing to the folds. The binding remains tight. A neat previous owner's name to the front upper blank end-paper. Some offsetting to the blank end-papers with some occasional spotting to the prelims and to the text. The tissue guarded frontis by Graham Robertson is present. The book has not undergone any repairs or restoration and presents as an excellent example. The book is protected in a loose Mylar archival cover and housed in a custom solander box with marbled inserts, silk ties and gilt titling. 'Originally written as bedtime stories and letters addressed to Grahame's only child, a sickly boy named Alastair and nicknamed 'Mouse', the book was rejected by Grahame's publisher The Bodley Head and eventually taken up by Methuen, albeit without advance payment, such was the firm's lack of confidence in the book' (ODNB). 'It was not until AA Milne adapted parts of the book into a popular stage version, 'Toad of Toad Hall', in 1929, that it became established as the children's classic it is known as today' (The Guardian). An excellent copy with such attributes. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Description:
Published by The Gogmagog Private Press in 1975. Twelve colour 'blocks designed, made and printed by the artist', each measuring 41.5cm x 29cm and numbered (number 8). Each titled, dated and signed by Morris Cox in pencil in the lower margin. Illustrated title page, with tissue guards which are all present. All loose as issued in the original morocco backed and decorated drop back box which has gilt titling and has been cork lined by Gemma O'Connor. The Prints and Box are in Fine condition. Although the edition size was only 20 sets, five sets were broken up and sold as separate prints. Two sets are held at the V& A museum (www.jisc.ac.). 'To enjoy this brilliant work the prints should be side by side, spread across a table. Viewed thus one might suggest a large claim, as that they are among the very finest essays in colour printing produced during this century' (Chambers 26). A wonderful production from the Gogmagog Press and increasingly scarce to find as a complete set. More images available on…

Description:
Published by Clover Hill Editions, London in 1977. Number 'XXX1' of only 80 special copies, printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press on Barcham Green handmade paper, watermarked 'Clover Hill' (made for Douglas Cleverdon in 1936). The BOOK is in Fine condition, bound in quarter-morocco and marbled boards. Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this title is considered by many to be the artist's most significant work. These engravings were initially printed in the Golden Cockerel edition in 1927. Jones, however, felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones agreed to 'Clover Hill Editions' reprinting the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present…
