When Wild Harbour was first published in 1936, the anxious days before war was to break again on a weary world, the author, Ian Macpherson, asked if it would be possible to avoid destruction by retiring 'for the duration' to a remote spot beyond the range of bombs, poison gas and bacteria. He answered his question in this novel which tells the story of two deeply imaginative people, Hugh and his wife Terry, who flee to the Highlands of Scotland on the outbreak of a war to end all wars. There, they find not the idyll that they had expected but a harsh world where even the anarchy of 'civilisation' makes itself felt and at one point when they try and return to their home they find it desolate and in ruins. The world as they knew it has come to an end. The grim plot of the novel, with its tragic but inevitable conclusion, is as topical today, when the threat of nuclear annihilation is ever-present. B2B.
