Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1956. Hardcover. 8vo. Grey cloth with brown lettering and green decorations, pictorial dust jacket. xii, 434pp. Numerous small illustrations, map endpapers. Near fine/very good. Jacket a bit edgeworn, with spine slightly sunned, a few small edge chips and expert archival mends on verso. A tight, handsome fourth printing of this natural history travelogue throughout North America, described thusly on front jacket panel: "A distinguished naturalist takes his British colleague on a 30,000 mile tour of the continent. On the title page, the renowned artist and ornithologist known as "the inventor of the modern field guide" (1908-96) boldly inscribes and signs in blue ballpoint: "With best regards / Roger Tory Peterson." Quite uncommon in nicely signed copies. Nonauthorial gift inscription on front flyleaf to Robert Parker Coffin (1917-2019), noted Chicago architect and engineer, from his mother.
