Very good. - Thick quarto [approximately 11 inches high by 8 inches wide] navy blue pebbled cloth titled in gilt with a vignette of a discus thrower in gilt within a decorative frame on the front cover. The corners are lightly bumped & the titling on the spine is slightly faded. xi & 964 pages, printed in 2 columns. Illustrated with 100 black-and-white portrait plates. Very good.

From the library of Samuel Collom president of the United States Lawn Tennis Association, with his name stamped in gilt on the front cover. Collum has turned down the corner of the page where his biography appears.

Among the 100 portraits in the book are those of Elmer Oliphant, high-scoring college football player; Grover Cleveland Alexander, Hall of Fame baseball pitcher; Bill Tilden, great tennis player; Glenna Collett, Hall of Fame golfer who dominated women's golf in the '20s; Walter Johnson, Hall of Fame baseball pitcher; Ed "Strangler" Lewis, four-time World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion; Knute Rockne, great Notre Dame football coach; Babe Ruth, baseball star; Tris Speaker, somewhat controversial Hall of Fame baseball player; Johnny Weissmuller, competition swimmer, best known for playing Tarzan in the 1930s-1940s movies; Jim Thorpe, first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal.
