Black coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. A novel set in Sydney between World War I and II. In this novel the author treats sexuality in all its forms with a clear eyed view and delves deeply into the conflict between lawful and conventional sexual behaviour that can give rise to destructive impulses. When it was first published the book caused a few eyebrows to be raised with its frank and unsentimental dealing of sex in all its permutations. The first volume (only) of a two-volume set. Softening of the back strip edges with noticeable cocking of the spine. Uniform tanning of the text block edges and age toning of the pages. A few foxing spots to the end pages.
