About This Item
Chicago: Rand, McNally & Company, n.y.. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Red varnished cloth with gilt lettering, rules and decoration. 362pp. Top edge gilt. Very good. Spine sunned. A tight and nice reprint edition, undated but circa turn-of-the-century. This historical novel set during the Hundred Years' War (1366-67) was first published in 1891. Interestingly, if trivial, front flyleaf bears the boldly pencilled ownership signature of C.W. Litchfield -- Cyrenus Wirt Litchfield (1834-1917), an Illinoisan who was supposedly the first person to enlist for Civil War duty from Du Page County, joining the Illinois volunteer cavalry company called Barker's Dragoons on April 19, 1862.
