New York: Doubleday, Doran & Co, 1929. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. 8vo., 321pp. Beautiful Stated First Edition of this Art-Deco gem describing the multitude of restaurants in Paris that are, "costly and cheap, dignified and gay, known and little known, and how to enjoy them". There is also a section on French wines. Bound in publisher's black cloth with illustrated labels on front board and spine. Square, tight and clean throughout with no toning or foxing. A small blemish to cloth on the top front corner and barely bumped heel and crown. Remarkably well preserved, Stunning original, unclipped Jeanette Warmuth, designed Deco dust-jacket, ($2.50), has some trivial edge-wear and a couple of miniscule, barely noticeable closed edge-tears. A fresh and bright example of a scarce jacket in any condition. Laid in is a typed letter on a folded 8.5" x 11" piece of paper to poet, author and editor, Charles Hanson Towne, who was immensely popular at the time whose work largely was a celebration of New York City. He was editor for Harper's Bazaar magazine when Street is writing this thank you note to him, "Scarborough, Aug. 8. Dear Charlie, Just a line to thank you for what you did about that story, and particularly for your kindness in taking the trouble to telephone me. It was kind and thoughtful of you and I want to know I appreciate it. I like, also, sentimentally, the idea of your last official act as editor being the purchase of a story from me. Margo and I both wish we had a car fit to make the trip over in, but perhaps we can run out from town in Sept. Faithfully yours", and then signed "Julian". Clearly, after typing the letter, Street thought to ask Towne for his address which he has done by hand at the bottom of the page. There is also a short, neat gift inscription to "Charlie" on the front end-paper that though appears to be in the same hand, is signed what looks like "Judy" date two months earlier. Perhaps a nickname but possible just from an unknown presenter. Housed in a custom tray case bound in 1/4 blue morocco and decorative blue cloth covered boards which has a couple of tiny rubs and toning to top and outer panels and edges. A simply gorgeous copy that is very unlikely to be found in such high-grade collectable condition.

Description:
This travel guide book is a follow up to an earlier publication by the same name. It is in very good condition, with a sound binding, black hardcover boards and spine with a rectangular title box at the top. Neither edges nor corners show wear. It has the original dust jacket, with a tear at the top edge, two missing strips on the front and slight wear at the top of the spine. The jacket is brightly colored and illustrted in stylized Deco figures by JAY. A mylar cover has been added. The front and rear panels of the jacket were trimmed on the corners (probably to facilitate insertion into the mylar) but the price is intact. The pages are clean. Owner's signature and date in ink on the first page. A very handsome copy.

Description:
New York: Doubleday, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Facsimile. Original black cloth, corners slightly bumped, light wear, in a nice facsimile jacket. A revised edition of a previous Paris guide, but the first under this name. Inscribed by Street to Tracy Drake, founder of the Drake Hotel and the Blackstone Hotel and Theater. Street was from Chicago - a nice association of two turn of the century high society characters. 321pp A prodigious list of places to eat and drink in Paris between the wars along with a wine guide and a nice section of vocabulary. The inscription is dated Oct 25, 1930 "37 E. 38th St., NY". Perhaps a theater party they both attended in Murray Hill. Size: 8vo. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo.
