The story of a group of workers who refused to join a Trade Union, and were against the 'closed shop' practice (compulsory union membership), and presents a precis of the deliberations and decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, when its delegates from 21 member countries were called upon to examine the claim that the UK government was denying its nationals essential rights and freedoms guaranteed in the European Convention on Human Rights, to which the UK was a party. The case of James, Young and Webster (the author) v the United Kingdom Government eventually, after a six year long procedure of appeal, was won - and the case has been seen as one of the most important in British constitutional history. 21.
