Albany, Texas; (1989): Clear Fork Press. Limited Edition. Square Octavo. Signed by Clifton Caldwell, with an introduction by George B. Ward. xiii[xiv], 65 pages. Only 1,000 copies were printed but 700 were only made available for sale. This captivating reminiscence was originally written down in 1938 when Clifton Caldwell's 75 year old grandfather sat down at a typewriter in his adobe ranch house near Alpine, Texas and told the story of his youth. The humorous and poignant stories, written in diary form, tell of his boyhood during and immediately following the Civil War in Louisiana and Central Texas. Bound in 1/4 maroon cloth over pictorial paper over baords with photographic image of Tippit,, spine lettering gilt, in publisher's clear mylar jacket with a few closed tears and chips.

Cream-colored covers and red binding, with picture of Tippit on front and gilt lettering on spine. Upper corners of covers are bumped and back upper corner has a small tear. Lettering on spine has dulled some. Inside front cover has a scrape near side edge, and inside back cover has a sticker from a previous owner. Book is in good condition. Boyhood reminiscences of life in 1860’s rural Louisiana and Texas as recounted by John Allen Tippit (1862-1939), school teacher, rancher, and orchardist, who was affectionately known as "Apple Jack." Tippet and his family moved West at the close of the Civil War, leaving the cotton plantations of Bianville Parish, Louisiana for the Central Texas frontier and an arduous but rewarding life on the prairie. Thirteen-page background by George B. Ward, Texas State Historical Association. Published in limited edition of 1000, of which 700 were offered for sale. Printed by David Holman at Wind River Press. Fine, in clear dust wrapper, also Fine.
