Girard, KS: J.A. Wayland, 1903. Pamphlet. 44p., portrait of the author (described as a "Negro Socialist Orator"), staplebound pamphlet. Cover unevenly toned, some neat pencil marginalia on several pages. Woodbey, an African American Baptist minister from San Diego, was a Christian socialist who infused his sermons and his writings with the social gospel. Wayland's Monthly, no. 40. Born in Tennessee, Woodbey moved to Nebraska after his ordination and ran for Lieutenant Governor on the Prohibition ticket. After joining the Socialist Party and moving to San Diego in 1902, he became a soapbox orator of considerable renown and a public presence for the Party, serving on its state executive board, and editing the New Idea, a San Diego black socialist newspaper, during its six years of existence. His writings were published in 1983 under the title, Black Socialist Preacher. See Elizabeth Heath's entry in Appiah and Gates, Africana.
