About This Item
Hamburg: Hirundo Press, 2005. Limited Edition. Softcover. Fine. Saltzwedel, Caroline. Number 28 of 150 copies, folio size, 18 unnumbered pp., signed by Kevin Perryman and Caroline Saltzwedel, in German. Caroline Saltzwedel, born in England, has lived in Hamburg since 1995 as a graphic artist and painter. She studied German at the Universities of Durham, Oxford and Bonn, and printed graphics at the Ruskin School of Fine Art, Oxford. In 1998 she founded the Hirundo Press for artists' books in small editions; her works are in numerous public and private collections, including the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, the British Library, the Bodleian Library, Stanford University, and the Widener Library (Harvard), among many others.
Caroline's works are often paired with original, new works of poetry such as this, "Was Wellen betrifft". Written by Kevin Perryman, a poet and translator, founder of the translation journal BABEL, who writes in both German and English (n. b., info from the Hirundo Press website). The fourteen poems here concern waves and water, and the text has a lyrical mysticism in tune with the subject. Included also is a two-colour etching by Caroline Saltzwedel, titled, numbered, and signed by her in pencil. In addition to the etching, Saltzwedel also created a three-colour woodcut for the cover, as well as a computer print-out of an English translation of some of the poems in the book.
___DESCRIPTION: Soft paper cover with separate outer cardstock paper wrap, with a wraparound woodcut by Caroline Saltzwedel in shades of blue and grey/white and silver lettering on the front cover, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page with printer's design in black and white; Van Dijck type, Hahnemule paper, folio size (12.5' by 8.25"), pagination: 18 unnumbered pages, one of 150 copies, this number 28, signed by Kevin Perryman and Caroline Saltzwedel on the colophon. Please note that the text is in German. Loosely laid in is a two-colour etching by Saltzwedel, titled, numbered, and signed by her in pencil along the bottom. A computer print-out, two pages, of English translations of some of the poems is also loosely laid in.
___CONDITION: A fine copy, the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The entire work as new; this from a private collection who acquired the work directly from the Press.
