Out of the mouth of a distracted mother of five on a Glasgow Fair excursion came the words which inspired J. J. Bell's book: ' Macgreegor, tak' yer pau's haun', or ye'll get nae carvies to yer tea '. Gradually the little family took shape in the author's mind and his first Macgreegor story was greeted by the editor of the Evening Times with, ' That's the stuff to give 'em, my boy! Do it again!' " Macgreegor", it has been said, has a universal appeal; he is the small boy of all lands and of all ages. Into this comical little character J. J. Bell put all his broad humanity and sympathy. Every author has, admittedly, his own vision of life, and to Bell the ordinary, commonplace characters were the salt of the earth. Add to the salt the savour of humour, and they became delightful people. The attractive thing about this book is that one can open it at any page, begin to read, and at once become engrossed, and amused.
