Illustrated boards, being a reproduction of the artist Ivor Heles' painting " Tobruk ", with brown and red writing on the front panel and spine. Illustrated dust wrapper, same illustration as for underlying board, with red and brown writing on the front panel and spine. In World War II there was a siege in an obscure town in north African, called Tobruk, which lasted 242 days. The men defending this town were men from the Commonwealth nations -- including Australians, New Zealanders, English and Canadian, and their besiegers were the Germans who gave them the unflattering nickname " The Rats of Tobruk ". This novel is based on personal experience as the author was a survivor of that siege. the top edge of the text block has a rubber stamp of a star, no other markings, no annotations, no damage to describe.
