Good. 10 x 9 inches, mounted on backing sheet, good with remains of masking tape around border, probably from when this was framed. We could find out nothing about E. Lavelle but clearly talented from the psychological depth of the woman's expression -- stoicism, melancholy and strength all feature in her visage.

Hotel Brunswick, 1884. A 4" x 5" heavy card menu. The front depict a watercolor caricature of a woman holding a "separation" banner on an applied die-cut card surrounded by pink silk fringe. The reverse is the menu printed in gold ink. The starter is "Sorbet a l'Africaine." The Glaces course is "La Fontaine de Separation" In 1884, Otto von Bismarck convened the Berlin Conference to discuss the African problem. [Np., c. 1850s-1860s?]. Watercolor on oval board. (The overall composition and plain background may indicate that this image was rendered after a photograph.) 8¾ x 7¼ inches. In modern frame, glazed. Small stain at upper right not affecting portrait; some wear and staining to mount; very good. Attractive mid-19th century watercolor portrait of a woman seated at a table or writing desk and holding a letter. Her face, coiffure, and lace-trimmed, black crinoline dress are skillfully rendered. The woman sits at a red cloth covered table with writing accoutrements. Her confident pose holding a letter suggests that she is both genteel and literate.
