Watt with the Author's kindest wishes. 6th June 1891". 12 mono full page plates by Green, each with a tissue guard. Original dark green cloth blocked with elaborate blind decoration, spines lettered in gilt, floral patterned endpapers. Cloth very slightly rubbed at extremities and a few thin white streaks to the front board of volume one and some light foxing to the decorative endpapers, otherwise clean, tight and bright throughout. Overall a better than very good set. Alexander Pollock Watt (1838–1914) was the first successful British literary agent. His agency, started in 1875, is still active today and is, in fact, the longest-established literary agency in the world. He acted as Besant's agent, and also his literary executor.

NP. (Book published by Blackie & Son). Circa 1949. ORIGINAL FULL COLOUR ARTWORK. The watercolour image shows Snowdrop (Snow White) lying asleep at the edge of a forest. Stood over her is a handsome Prince dressed in elaborate multi coloured outfit with a large hat in his hand, complete with many different coloured large feathers. Gathered below are the seven dwarves, three with tears in their eyes,all with lit candles strapped to their hats. Many birds and a fox and rabbit and a squirrel also feature. A beautiful full colour watercolour. At the bottom of the image is written, in pencil "Grimms Fairy Tales-(frontispiece)-Snowdrop". The painting is signed with Baynes' Spread Eagle design in the bottom right corner. Image size is 8.6 x 5.6 inches. Mounted, framed and glazed to give a total size of 15.6 x 12 inches. Published as the frontis for a 1950's edition of Grimm's fairy tales issued by Blackie & Son Limited, London and Glasgow in their Blackie's famous books series. -- Through a contact I had who knew Pauline Baynes I sent a copy of the illustration to her shortly before she died to see if she could supply an more information. All she could remember was that she had painted it for the publishers Blackie in about 1949 as part of a series of watercolours for an edition of Grimm's fairy tales that was issued in the early 1950's. I have not been able to find a copy of that 1950's edition but do have a copy of a 1960's reprint with only one full colour plate, this painting, as the frontispiece. Other scenes painted by Baynes from Grimm stories illustrate the dustwrapper but Baynes is not credited as illustrator. A very good copy of the book, in original illustrated dustwrapper is included. A beautiful painting by one of the great twentieth century book illustrators, best known for her work on C. S. Lewis' Narnia series and J. R. R Tolkien's Tom Bombadil, Farmer Giles of Ham and Smith of Wooton Major.

Originally printed in the April 1885-March 1886 issues of "To-Day", this first edition was printed from the corrected and revised stereos of the original setting for the journal. This is the larger, variant issue, with the preliminary blank leaf bound at the beginning. Shaw explains the variant this way: "The size of the bigger copies is due to the fact that they reproduced not only the type but the format of To-day. But the booksellers objected that in this form it occupied too much room to be displayed on their stalls and counters. It was probably cut down as far as the margins would allow to meet this objection" (Laurence).
