About This Item

New York: Oxford University Press, 2004. x, 564 pages, b/w ills, 19 maps, appendices, historiography, bibliography, notes, index. Cloth boards, gilt spine titles, in dust-jacket. Each of the books in this series examines a large historical event or process that changed the course of American development. From the Editor's Note, 'No single day in history was more decisive for the creation of the United States than nine days from December 25, 1776 to January 3, 1977 when ragged colonials attacked and defeated Hessian soldiers at Trenton, withstood a British counterattack in Trenton and then defeated British reinforcements at Princeton. These victories saved the American Revolution from collapse'.. Reprint. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 8vo.

Synopsis

Washington's Crossing frames the events of the winter of 1776-1777 during the American Revolution. The iconic painting of Washington crossing the Delaware is indeed a passionate image, but it is certainly stylized. It is this symbol, this myth of American history, that Fischer argues as the turning point for the psychological victory of the Revolution, the morale of the American troops locked in a miserable winter, and the unyielding proof of the tireless quest for a free America.
