New York: The MacMillan Co, 1947. Octavo. xii.127 pages, Inscribed:" to Hon. Frances Perkins with kind regards, Myron C. Taylor, April 12, 1947" While she was the first woman in a President's cabinet, her contributions to the unfair conditions in the workplace led to the 40 hour work week, workman's compensation, and she emphasized to FDR the need for Social Security. When she met with major labor leaders and the large corporations in April of 1937, most of the heads of big business despised her. Myron C. Taylor was head of U.S. Steel but he agreed that good economics should do more on behalf of workers and hopefully make strikes unnecessary. In 1938 FDR sent him to the International Conference on behalf of Jews who were attempting to flee Europe while the U.S. and other countries had very narrow immigration laws often aimed at Jews. The book deals with: The first exchange of messages -- The dark days of 1940 -- "The seekers of light ad the seekers of peace" -- Easter, April, 1941 -- Assistance to the Soviet Union -- America at war -- The turning point of the war -- The invasion of Italy -- Toward "true and enduring peace" -- The death of the President. The owner has placed a U.S. stamp honoring Frances Perkins on the front pastedown. Bound in 1/4 light borwn cloth over red cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. A fine bright copy.
