About This Item

Denmark 2016. In the exhibition Andy Warhol – the Man behind the Myth, we leave the traditional image of Warhol behind, delving deeper into the man himself. Through themes of death, sexuality, and religion, we try to catch a glimpse of the fabled father of pop art. The exhibition features a number of works and effects not previously shown in Denmark. With the work series Disasters and Suicides, it focuses on Warhol’s ambition about giving death an artistic expression, while his many dietary books and obsessive preoccupation with health was a testimony to his very fear of it. The exhibition also focuses on the conflicting aspects of Warhol’s religious life and his homosexuality. The work The Last Supper and the artist’s personal, tattered prayer book attest to his strong faith, while the self-portraits with Warhol wearing a wig and women’s clothing point in a different direction. Andy Warhol – the Man behind the Myth features the classic Warhol works, but also attempts to open visitors’ eyes to the narrowly defined currents contained in Warhol’s art. The extensive collection of personal effects contained everything from books about health and diets to homosexual pornography, giving us a unique glimpse of the artist as a private person., English/Danish, Year2016, Illust.
