About This Item

London: W.H. Allen, 1893. Gilt titles and black pictorials on red cloth boards. Boards have a small tear and wear to spine top, age darkening to spine and some marks. Internally the front and rear hinges are cracked but holding, a second front endpaper has been removed (although not a library copy) and there is a stamped name to half title page and to the top of the title page. Pages are clean and unmarked. 263 pages From The Spectator 7th April 1894 'This is a clever little sketch, with every appearance of truthfulness about it, representing life in a little Scottish town during the Crimean War. The characters, the incidents, the little details, are all as natural as possible. Probably the picture is really composite; so many interesting figures, so many notable incidents, could hardly have been collected into so small a compass of time and space; but the arrangement has been very skilfully done. The second part of the volume, 'In the Cannon's Mouth' is an experience belonging to the first Afghan War'. Sarah TYtler was the pseudonym of Henrietta Keddie (1827-1914) a prolific Scottish author. VERY SCARCE B2A. First. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
