Ex-library, with two labels and a stamp to each of the front endpapers from Churchill College, Cambridge, one label and the stamp in each volume cancelled. Buckram, d.w.'s, spine slightly browned, a little loss to the foot of that to volume I.

Churchill's War Speeches were first published by Cassell in seven volumes between 1941 and 1946, followed by Charles Eade's definitive edition in three volumes in 1952. This later edition, published by Purnell in association with the original publisher, preserves Eade's text and retains the much-needed index. COMPLETE SETS IN THIS CONDITION ARE SCARCE. First Taiwanese pirated edition of the definitive edition of Churchill's war speeches, a photographic reproduction of the authorized edition printed in Britain by Cassell in 1952. This set is from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer Ronald Cohen. The Taiwanese edition mimics the original jacket design, and photographically reproduce the contents, though removing all references to the original publisher. The physical size of the book is reduced. Provenance: Ronald Cohen, with his ownership inscription in pencil on the front free endpapers. Cohen's Bibliography of the Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, published in three volumes in 2006, is the authoritative source for collectors, librarians, and dealers. 3 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, spines lettered in silver. With dust jackets. Publisher's imprint stamp to rear free endpaper. The proof is very similar to the published version, the chief difference being the absence of plates. The copy is from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer Ronald Cohen, with his ownership inscription in pencil on the front free endpaper. Cohen's Bibliography of the Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, published in three volumes in 2006, is the authoritative source for collectors, librarians, and dealers. Octavo. Original grey wrappers printed in black. A little light wear at extremities, wrappers a little soiled. A very good copy. Cohen A172.1 (first published edition).

A publisher's dummy copy of the first US edition, with blank contents throughout following the title page, contents, and part of the first speech; this copy is from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer Ronald Cohen. Included is a 6-page insert "to the bookseller", including excerpts from the book, a preview by Raymond Gram Swing, and opportunity for advance orders: "plan now to take advance orders this important book - a book which will have a permanent value for the library of every intelligent American. Special prepublication price $3. Price on and after Oct. 21st $3.50". The dummy copies were part of a major advance push for the book by the publishers: "large space advertising has already appeared... there will be circulars, dummy books and display cards" (Publisher's Weekly, 26 September 1942, p. 1,215). First US collected edition, first printing, being the definitive edition of Churchill's war speeches, compiled by his literary secretary. During the war, Churchill's speeches were published in annual volumes. "Produced to cheap standards owing to wartime shortages and restrictions, the original volumes were all out of print by 1952. Cassell decided to reissue the war speeches in a new, expansive and comprehensive edition of three tall, elegant volumes printed in large type and generous margins on quality stock" (Langworth, p. 303). The American edition was issued from sheets of Cassell's first British edition, published the previous year. Only 500 sets of the American edition were made, and it is much scarcer than its British counterpart, more so with the slipcase. During the war, Churchill's speeches were published in annual volumes. "Produced to cheap standards owing to wartime shortages and restrictions, the original volumes were all out of print by 1952. Cassell decided to reissue the war speeches in a new, expansive and comprehensive edition of three tall, elegant volumes printed in large type and generous margins on quality stock" (Langworth, p. 303). Attractively bound in recent burgundy morocco, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Frontispieces in first five volumes along with other photographs. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set.

Presented to his wartime private secretary First edition, first impression, presentation copy, in the publisher's deluxe presentation morocco and signed by Churchill on the initial binder's blank, for John Peck, his wartime private secretary. Peck (1913-1995) joined the Civil Service in 1936. When Churchill became prime minister in May 1940, Peck was appointed as one of four private secretaries. He was the only private secretary to serve Churchill throughout the war. Peck briefly served Attlee following Churchill's defeat in the 1945 election, and was transferred to the Foreign Office in 1946. He held a number of subsequent roles, concluding as British Ambassador to Dublin from 1970 to 1973. For each volume of Churchill's war speeches, a small number were bound specially for presentation, with these rarely encountered in commerce.
