The book has at some stage been subjected to damp storage conditions that injured the top of the book. The damp damage has transferred through the book and affects the top edges of the pages. In general, however, the text and the illustrations are unaffected. The book is resolutely steady and sound. The boards have other wear and handling marks. They are still sure. The contents have some foxing, aging. The frontispage is intriguingly signed by a previous owner, "Betty The Rebel"! The edges have some shallow shelving wear. The spine has been darkened and burnished from shelving and handling. The spine and boards are comfortable and sure. The paper-edges are untrimmed (they are also foxed). The contents are mild-mannered, convivial. They have some light flurries of foxing about the edges. The early and later pages have age-spots and some blots of foxing. The pages are however, pleasingly contented, genial, clean and clear, certain, amenable and amiable. fk. Large octavo (approx. 6 1/4" wide by 8 3/8" tall) green cloth covers with gilt titles, white rules and decorations on the top cover and spine. Top edge gilt. xiv + 255 [1] pages. 99 plates, most in color. Each plate has a tissue guard with description of the plate printed on it. Seven facsimiles letters, etc (including fold-out diagram of the Boer Plan of the Battle of Magersfontein). Light scattered foxing throughout, and some browning on endpapers. Liquid splash mark on front paste down which has permeated through the volume on folio fore-edges but thios has not affected contents. Slight rubbing to head/foot of spine. Light tanning to front and rear end papers. Previous owners inscribed envelope pasted to FFE. Several light internal cracks. Clean text with colour illustrations protected by tissue guards. Records the sketches of Mortimer Menpes recording his military time time in South Africa.
