About This Item

UK,8vo HB,no dw/dj,as issued,1st edn,2nd imp.[Same year as 1st,1979.] FINE.No owner inscrptn,no dw/dj - as issued(?).B/w photographic decorated, laminated bds with minimal shelf-wear to edges and bottom corners very lightly bumped.Top edge very lightly foxed/ spotted.Contents bright, tight and clean.UK,8vo HB,1st edn,2nd imp,144pp includes b/w maps,14pp b/w photographs, some b/w line illus chapter tail-pieces,appendices(2) and bibliography. The 1960's saw a great run-down of branch and cross-country lines on British Railways than ever before with Dr Beeching trimming off loss-making routes, many of which had served their localities for more than a century.Rail closures were not new,for some lines had succumbed to bus and car competition as early as the 1920's.Some of the closed routes disappeared into adjoining farmland, others vanished under new roads, but many can still be traced, for although tracks have gone the roadbed can still be found, pursuing a steady course through cuttings,on embankments, even over bridges. No longer disturbed by passing trains, many closed lines have become miniature nature reserves with fauna and flora in abundance. Some now serve as footpaths, while others have been taken under the wing of local authorities to form nature trails or bridleways. Some are impassable where land has been sold to industry or for private development. In this practical guide to rambling along closed railways Somerville discusses the various states of closed lines, methods of access, legal rights of way, what you can and cannot do,things you can see on the way and the many changes that may have occurred since the track was lifted. He describes walks on specific lines in different parts of the country, while a gazetteer summarises many other routes more suited to Shanks's pony than the iron horse. This edn now out-of-print as the publisher ceased trading in the late 1980's. Please contact rpaxtonden@blueyonder.co.uk ,because of the lighter weight of this item, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
