Signature of a previous owner to the front pastedown, the body of text clean and unmarked, .

In modern half tan leather with contemporary boards, gilt tooling. Spine, gilt tooling, title in gilt to maroon calf label. Internally, frontis, [5], (viii) only, [1], 2-239 pp, 1 pl, 17 maps within text, 13 printers devices, bookplate of 97, lacks half title, new endpapers, bookplate remains to fpd, ink signature to title page head (Wm Read), some marginal highlighting. (Graesse 421. Lowndes 2844/5. Allibone 2585. ESTC T92267).
Warner, took up a curacy at Boldre, Hampshire. Here he served under the Revd William Gilpin (1724–1804), an enthusiastic walker and admirer of New Forest scenery, who could no longer minister to his parishioners himself. Gilpin became a close friend, a fatherly patron, and a formative literary influence. See ODNB for a full bio.

Warner, spent his vacation of August 1796 in Wales, walking from Bath to Caernarfon and back; he covered 36 miles on the first day and 462 miles in all, at an average of 26 miles a day. No foxing but frontis of Tintern Abbey and title page browned. 17 maps, one at the beginning of the account of each day's walk. 13 'printer's devices'. An itinerary is provided for the walk which totalled 462 miles between 14th and 31st August, 1797. No inscription, name plate or marking in text.
