Contemporary speckled calf, raised bands to spine heavily decorated in gilt with labels for title and volume; all edges stained red, marbled endpapers. Book Condition: upper joint cracked, lower joint starting though both hinges are sound, corners showing wear, with scuffing to spine ends, and here and there in small patches; binding very sound and interior fresh bright and unmarred. Very Good at least. From the personal library of Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816); Founding Father, contributor to U.S. Constitution, Revolutionary War hero, and liver of altogether amazing life. The Gouverneur Morris armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Condition of bookplate is Very Good+ at least. The 18th century copper engraving features the motto: "Tandem vincitur". [Allen: 591]. An extraordinarily scarce bookplate in a decidedly uncommon first edition of the first book of the monumental 42 volume "Le Voyageur François Ou La Connoissance De L'Ancien Et Du Nouveau Monde

Book Condition: joints cracked with chipping, though both hinges are sound, corners showing wear, spine ends perished at edges, and here and there in small patches; scratch down length of 1st half of spine creating the optical illusion of the book splitting asunder, earthquake style- but that's not happening-the earthquake of the spine that is. Binding very sound, gilt lettering and decorations to spine pale and wan, interior fresh, bright, completely free of foxing. Very Good-.
