A handsome set of the first edition of this comprehensive account. Atlas volume with 97 engravings on 66 leaves, including large map on two folding sheets, two full page maps and two folding maps. The maps include the region between Peking and Qingdao (Canton), map and plan of Macao, maps of the Philippines and of Manila Bay. The plates illustrate views, architecture of palaces and pagodas, street life, gardens, theater, costume, etc. Text deals with foreign trading companies, industry, canals, ships, roads, painting and sculpture, porcelain, festivals and customs and so on. Guignes, a French orientalist scholar and diplomat, was appointed French resident in China and Consul in Canton in 1784. His written works were well-regarded and popular and Navigantium was published in 2 further enlarged editions. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
