London: Printed for T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, Cobbett and Morgan, and W. Creech, M.DCCCI, 1801. (26 cm x 20.5 cm), pp. half-title, title-page, dedication page, iii-viii, [i]-cxxxii, [1]-412, [2] Errata, engraved frontispiece portrait, 3 large folding maps (the map of North America with hand-coloured route outlined). Bound in contemporary paw-print acid-washed leather with gilt-tooled frame, simple gilt-panelled spine, gilt title on green leather spine label, marbled endpapers. Previous owner's tiny neat signature to head of half-title, offsetting from the frontispiece as usual, minor offsetting to maps, gentle age-tanning to the paper, otherwise interior exceptionally clean and crisp. Expertly and invisibly rebacked with original spine laiddown, corners consolidated. A very good, handsome, complete copy in contemporary leather binding. "The first overland expedition to reach the Pacific north of Mexico across North America." TPL 658. Streeter 3653. "First crossing of the continent from ocean to ocean by a white man. The narrative portion was prepared for publication by William Combe from Mackenzie's notes. The account of the fur trade -- first ever published -- is attributed to Roderick Mackenzie [his brother]." - Howes 133. "In 1789, Mackenzie's crew which included French-Canadian voyagers, his wife and several others paddled off in a birchbark canoe from Fort Chipewyan in central Canada. Other canoes, navigated by Indian hunters and interpreters, followed behind. Over 100 days later, however, Mackenzie's entourage arrived back at the fort with details of another route to the Arctic Ocean, not the elusive Pacific. Though this first trip aided in mapping the northern regions of the continent, Mackenzie remained determined to find the "Western Sea." Therefore, on May 9, 1793, Mackenzie, with nine others, packed into a 25-foot canoe at Fort Fork along the Peace River for a second voyage. This time, he succeeded, and announced his arrival on a rock near Bella Coola near the Pacific by painting the following words with a vermillion and grease mixture: "Alexander Mackenzie, from Canada, by land, the twenty-second of July, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-three."" - (PBS website). Description:
London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1859. First Edition of this fascinating record of the western travels of one of the most famous nineteenth century Canadian painters. Inspired by George Catlin, whom he met during a visit to Europe, Kane determined to sketch and paint a series of pictures illustrative of North American Indians and scenery. He set out for the west in June of 1845, "with no companions but [his] portfolio and box of paints, [his] gun, and a stock of ammunition", spending the season in the Lake Huron and Lake Michigan region, chiefly among the Ojibway. For the next three years, he travelled further westward, mostly in company with Hudson’s Bay Company fur trade brigades, through the territories of the Red River settlements and the valley of the Saskatchewan, across the Rocky Mountains, down the Columbia to Puget Sound, and north to Vancouver Island. Kane brought back hundreds of detailed sketches: portraits of Indian chiefs, warriors, and medicine men, buffalo… Read More

Description:
Paris: Fabrique Générale d'Articles de Voyages, 1840. First Edition. Alexis Godillot (1816-1893) was a contemporary of Louis Vuitton (1821-1892) and first achieved renown in Paris for his beautiful hand-made luggage. With a workshop situated just a few blocks away from Vuitton's, this catalogue comes from this very early period of Godillot's life before he had revolutionised footwear by differentiating the moulding of the left shoe from the right and become the famous shoemaker who would go on to equip over one hundred thousand French soldiers for The Crimean War. 'Godillot' remains a slang French term for 'boot' to this day. The album features superb hand-coloured lithographs with an original sketch showcasing nearly one hundred accessories including bags, picnic baskets, apparel, wonderful old trunks, tents, and hammocks- true 'objets nomades' - many of which are in surprisingly bold and modern designs. A beautiful, rare, and precious catalogue of the articles a traveller might require for… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.

Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series, volumes 138 and 139. First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle seventeen embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kins ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. W E D Allen and Anthony… Read More
