Original green blind stamped marbled cloth, uncut (neatly rebacked in modern cloth. Rebacked as noted, some wear to the fragile original cloth though sound, minor occasional foxing but in all a very fresh, uncut example. First edition, half-titles in volumes 1-3 as called for, ads bound in at the rear as issued. Engraved portrait and 22 lithographed plates.[ iv], x, [ii], 49, [16, ads]; 2pp.; xiv, 492pp.; xvi, 474pp.; viii, 520pp. 4 vols. 8-7/8 x 5-1/2 inches (22.5 x 14 cm). After a brief career in the Royal Navy, from which he was invalided at the age of twenty-four, Holman became completely blind at age 25 and often endured great pain from crippling rheumatism, but despite his ailments, he undertook a series of solo journeys that would have deterred many a lesser man.
