An account mainly of Captain Beeckman's visit to South Kalimantan in 1713 to gain a foothold for British merchants in the lucrative pepper trade there. Unfortunately his arrival coincided with a local civil war. Nevertheless his observant eye was able to take in much about the culture of not only the town dwellers of Banjarmasin, but also of the aboriginal tribes in the vicinity. He also made fairly extensive notes of the wildlife in the region, identifying the orang utan as being particularly worth further study.
