About This Item
Farrar Straus Giroux, New York, 1992; First Edition, First Printing; 8vo, 419 pages. Susan Sontag’s historical 18th century Neapolitan romance based on the explosive lives of Sir William Hamilton, British Ambassador to the Kingdom Of Naples from 1764-1800, his second wife Emma Hart, and her lover Lord Nelson. From the moment of his arrival in Naples, Hamilton became enchanted with the Vesuvius and Etna volcanoes and soon felt compelled to write a study on vulcanology, for which he was made a fellow of the Royal Society. He later published his studies in two volumes: "Observations On Mount Vesuvius, Mount Etna, And Other Volcanoes" and "Campi Phlegraei." As New, in an As New dust jacket. A pristine copy.
