About This Item
San Francisco: Paul Elder & Company, 1903. First Edition. Signed presentation from Starr on the title page: "Eliza Shaw Baker- with the best regards of David Starr Jordan." Starr [1851-1931) was an American ichthyologist, educator eugenicist, and peace activist. He was president of Indiana University and the founding president of Stanford University. Sometimes controversial, Jordan promoted the concept of improving human genetics through removal from the breeding pool of those deemed unworthy to reproduce. The prominent role Jordan played in the eugenics movement and resulting programs of forced sterilization received posthumous condemnation. But his other major contributions have not been ignored. Starting in 1986, the David Starr Jordan Prize was funded as a joint endowment by Cornell, Indiana University, and Stanford. It is awarded to a young scientist (under 40 years of age) that was making contributions in one of Jordan's interests: evolution, ecology, and population. 8vo., gray cloth with paper spine label, top edge gilt; 278 pages. Very Good (covers nice with little creasing to paper spine label; contents very clean & tight with few very tiny dings to top edge).
