Milton sculpt.) and 1 additional plate; 22 cm. Half calf with marbled paper over boards. Six spine compartments with gilt-tooled decoration; black morocco spine label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title: Waller's Vindication. All pages edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Running title: Waller's Vindication. The additional plate is an engraved portrait of William Lenthal (signed S. Cooper pinxit and Thornthwaite sculpt.). Errata on leaf following p. 14 (following Introduction). In this copy the first erratum has been corrected in pencil to read line 5, rather than 6; the first 6 errata have also been corrected in the text in Pages 321-326 misnumbered 121-126. Without publisher's advertisements found on 2 additional leaves in some copies. Former owner's armorial bookplate ("Nec Degenero") on front fixed endpaper for William Lane Joynt. Possibly the William Lane Joynt (1824-1895) who was the founder of the Limerick Athenaeum and was elected Mayor of Limerick in 1862 and Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1867. Faint name in an old hand at the head of first page of the introduction. In Good+ Condition: most of leather is lacking from both upper corners and along spine on both boards; some gilt is lacking from spine; slight loss of leather at head of spine; front joint starting to separate from each end; other than the few pencilled notations noted above, pages are clean and tight.

London: Mark Baskett and the Assigns of Robert Baskett, 1764. Fine. [2],403-407,[1] p.; 33 cm. (folio). Three stab-holes, but no other evidence that this was ever bound. Edges are untrimmed. Title page reads "Anno Regni Georgii III. . . . At the Parliament begun and holden at Westminster, the Nineteenth Day of May, Anno Dom. 1761., in the First Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third . . . And from thence continued by several Prorogations to the Fifteenth Day of November, 1763, being the Third Session of the Twelfth Parliament of Great Britain." Woodcut royal coat of arms above the imprint. Woodcut historiated initial at the beginning of the act. In order to increase the supply of hemp and flax for the production of sail cloth and cordage, needed by the Royal Navy and the merchant marine, this act granted a bounty to those who brought those materials from the American colonies to England. In Fine Condition: clean and bright.

This book is in fairly good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards, as well as spots on the outside back cover board. There is minimal bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, with some vertical fraying and warping, but the pages are clear of markings. A few of the pages are dog-eared and edges torn. "The Forsyte Saga was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called 'The Man of Propery; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us.
