Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson, 1795. Later edition. Hardcover. Near Very Good. 8vo. [5], vi-xii, [1], 2-443, [3]. Original smooth calf, spine in five compartments with a maroon morocco label lettered in gilt. Spine shows additional gilt tooling. Evans 29274. Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: "Natural Theology and Natural Religion"; "Religion and Morality". Paley famous for his "watch and the watchmaker argument" for the existence of God, (to be first published in 1802) was a significant philosopher following Hume, and preceding Jeremy Bentham. Paley worked on proving the existence of God and the legitimacy of Christianity through philosophical methods. This volume examines the historical proof for Christianity and some potential objections to Paley's arguments. A Near Very Good book with the front joint starting, a small spot of loss to the title page, and two owner's names.
