The earliest pictures in this book are of sailors who had fought at Trafalgar. Included in the latest are men who were to take part in World War I. The period covered by these old photographs in fact witnessed greater and more widespread naval changes than any before or since. It is this fact which makes the pictures so valuable historically, as a graphic source, apart altogether from their obvious pictorial attractiveness.
