London 1977, Hamish Hamilton, first UK edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6x9, FINE/VG CONDITION ( dj is price clipped & light wear on rear dj cover ), 271 pages, end paper maps, illustrations, bibliog, index.----------------------------------------------Operational Intelligence Centre ( O.I.C. ), 1939-1945, was the nerve centre of the Admiralty. Profiting from the experience of the famous, Room 40 OB of First World War fame, it was designed to collect, co-ordinate, analyse and disseminate information from every possible source which could throw light on the intentions and movements of German maritime forces, naval, air and mercantile. Working in close co-operation with the Government Code and Cipher School at Bletchley Park, O.I.C. laboured indefatigably, despite early disappointments and frustrations, to supply the Navy and R.A.F. with the intelligence that would enable them to defeat Raeder's and Donitz's forces. Without O.I.C. and Bletchley Park it is no exaggeration to say that Germany might have won the Second World War. .Patrick Beesly, who himself served in O.I.C. from 1940 to 1945, has been able for the first time, to reveal the full story of the Operation Intelligence Centre. --------------------------------------------------The pursuit of the Bismarck, the escape of the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau through the Channel, the tragedy of Convoy P.Q.17 and the German equivalent, the Battle of the North Cape, and above all the crucial war against the U-boats, are only some of the events which are seen in an entirely new light and from a unique angle. The development of O.I.C.'s techniques, as the many sources of intelligence are perfected, the various ciphers broken and 'Special Intelligence' flows out from Bletchley Park, reads like an adventure story. ././.And this is precisely what it is. Very Special Intelligence is, however, more than just a thrilling story. Based on material and personal knowledge not available to the authors of a number of recent best-selling books on this subject, it sets the record straight and is a vitally important contribution to the history of naval warfare and intelligence.
