About This Item

Cambridge: Deighton, Bell, and Co., 1862. First edition of Calverley's classic work. Octavo, original cloth. In good condition. Ownership inscription. Rare. Widely considered the father of "the university school of humor", English poet and wit Charles Stuart Calverley is best-known for his Ode to Tobacco (1862), Translations into English and Latin (1866), and his Complete Works , published in 1901. "[Calverley] was a true poet; he was one of the most graceful scholars that Cambridge ever produced; and all his exuberant fun was based on a broad and strong foundation of Greek, Latin and English literature" (George W. E. Russell).
