New York: Devin-Adair, 1960. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/good. Firts printing (no statement as is correct). Hardcover. 340 pp. with index, war chronology. Illustrations. Fine in price clipped dust jacket with spine sticker--this copy deaccessioned from the War Library of a national military history organization, no markings except for the catalog numbered spine sticker on the jacket. Ripley joined the 9th Vermont Infantry while still in college and as a general led the Union forces into Richmond as the Confederate capital fell on April 3, 1865. His account of this and of events in the preceding three years are preserved in a series of nearly 500 leters to and from his parents, teo brothers, andfour sisters.
