Dated blue-green ink presentation inscription on lower half of half title: "Homenagem da // Renascença Portuguesa // 9 Abril 1919". 81 pp., (3 ll.). *** Second edition. First published 1916. Kol de Alvarenga (1892-1967), agricultural engineer and author, a native of Lisbon, occupied important official posts, mostly in the Ministério da Agricultura. Frequent contributor to newspapers and reviews devoted to agriculture, he was also a critic of art and literature. His library was sold at auction by Soares & Mendonça, with Manuel Ferreira as expert in 1968 and a preface by Pedro Veiga, the catalogue consisting of three volumes, containing over 8,000 lots.Renascença Portuguesa was a cultural and civic group founded in 1911 by Teixeira de Pascoaes, Jaime Cortesão, Raúl Proença, António Sérgio, Leonardo Coimbra, Álvaro Pinto, Augusto Casimiro, and others. The group's literary review, Á Aguia, continued publication until 1932. Pascoaes, Proença, and Sérgio soon disagreed on the long-term goals of Renascença Portuguesa, and the movement became the mouthpiece of Saudosismo. The educational influence of the Renascença Portuguesa continued to be felt through its Universidades Populares and hundreds of publications under the Renascença Portuguesa imprint on history, law, economy, literature, etc. On Renascença Portuguesa, see Mário Garcia in Biblos IV, 694.*** See Guerra Andrade, Dicionário de pseudónimos e iniciais p. 190; Grande enciclopédia, II, 196; Actualização, I, 255. Porbase locates a single copy of the present edition, at the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, as well as a single copy of the 1916 edition, in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal.
